The Manlius Library is seeking a highly capable and dynamic Director to lead the library in continuing and expanding its reputation for providing outstanding service to approximately 13,000 community residents. Situated in the Village and Town of Manlius, Onondaga County, New York, a suburb of the City of Syracuse, the Manlius Library is a Free Association library located within the Fayetteville-Manlius School District. The Library is supported by local taxes, voted on by the residents of the F-M school district and collected annually for the library by the school district, as well as donations from the community and proceeds from fundraising activities.
The library building, in the heart of the Village of Manlius, was expanded to approximately 20,000 square feet in 2006 and adjoins the Village offices, the Manlius Senior Centre, and the Town of Manlius Police Department in the “Village Center” complex.
The 2012 – 2013 budget of $1,180,000 supported circulation of 340,000 items with a collection of approximately 60,000 items; attendance of over 200,000; and a staff of 10 full-time and 16 part-time employees. Manlius Library is a member library of the Onondaga County Public Library (OCPL) system, and the Director participates actively in system-wide initiatives and policy recommendations.
With a solid financial base, a committed Board of Trustees, and a dedicated and talented staff, the Library is in a strong position to achieve even greater levels of excellence in the future.
The Director serves as the chief executive officer of the library, reporting to the 11-member Board of Trustees, and is responsible for pursuing the library’s mission, goals, and policies as determined by the Board of Trustees;
planning and directing the overall operations and management of the Library;
developing long-range plans and directions; fundraising and identifying other revenue resources;
working with the Budget Committee of the Board to develop the annual operating budget to be presented to voters in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District;
managing the financial operations of the Library within the established budget;
proposing new policies as well as updates and revisions to existing policies to the Library Board for approval;
providing effective leadership, management, and development opportunities to the staff;
working cooperatively with colleagues in the OCPL system;
and cultivating public support by collaborating and communicating with individuals, civic leaders, and organizations in the community.
Minimum qualifications include an MLS from an ALA accredited institution with a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in a library setting, preferably with at least 2 years in an administrative capacity.
The successful candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, leadership ability, and the ability to work collaboratively with the Board, staff, and community groups.
A strong commitment to maintaining and enhancing a welcoming and excellent customer service oriented environment, and an enthusiastic and energetic approach to innovation in collection management and programming are essential.
The position also requires solid organizational, analytical, problem solving and conceptual skills as well as familiarity with emerging technologies and social media.
Salary & Benefits:
Negotiable beginning at $65,000 plus benefits.
