SCRLC Webinar: Library Accessibility Audits

Description: Lynn, Jeff, Kate (and service dog Gem) visited five libraries in the SCRLC region to conduct accessibility audits. They will share an overview of the audit process and some of their top findings and recommendations for each library.

Presenters:

Lynn Gitlow, Ph.D., OTR/L, ATP is an adjunct associate professor of occupational therapy at Ithaca College. Dr. Gitlow has been an Occupational Therapist (OT) for over 30 years, specializing in the areas of environmental intervention and assistive technology. She is also certified by RESNA as an assistive technology practitioner (ATP). Her research has focused on use, outcomes and barriers to AT use. Dr. Gitlow has published her research in peer reviewed journals. Additionally, she has presented at local, national and international conferences on the topic of assistive technology, everyday technology and environmental interventions as an occupational therapy interventions.

Jeff Boles has been with Finger Lakes Independence Center for over 20 years. He uses his personal and professional experience to help people with disabilities achieve their goals, both individually and through group presentations. Jeff is a strong advocate for disability rights. He serves on the Developmental Disabilities Subcommittee of Tompkins County, advocates for the inclusion of adults and youth with disabilities in all community recreational activities, and assists with statewide systems advocacy which forwards awareness and action on disability relevant legislation. Jeff has facilitated numerous Living Well with a Disability programs at FLIC and strives to help others with disabilities live a healthy lifestyle. Jeff is well known in Tompkins County not only for his work at FLIC but also for his work as a coach and as an umpire with the Lansing Central School District and Lansing Parks and Recreation.

Kate Hooks is a retired Baltimore city public school teacher who returned to Ithaca after a progressive course with multiple sclerosis made teaching impossible. She currently works part-time for the Ithaca city school district supporting the teachers and students in the reading and writing lab as well as two sections of ninth grade English. After 12 years using a power wheelchair while remaining involved in everything the Ithaca area has to offer, Kate is especially attuned to the needs, limitations and obstacles facing the disabled community within the Finger Lakes region, and is eager to consult on any project whose goal is to improve the accessibility for all community members.
