Webinar: What You Need to Know About the Civil Service Exam

May 12 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT

Webinar Description:

Are you interested in working in a public library? Are you already working in a public library but want to move up through the ranks? We’ll hear from three panelists who will share what you need to know about taking these exams. They’ll share their personal experiences in the library world, best practices for preparing for these exams, and tips they’ve learned along the way.

We’ll be covering the librarian exams as well as those for clerks and assistants.

About the Panelists:

Becky Maguire received her MLS from Syracuse University in 2005 and has been a librarian in the Onondaga County Public Library System ever since. She has experience with cataloging and children’s services and was the Branch Manager of Mundy Library from 2019 to 2021. She is currently enjoying her new role as Administrator for Library Operations. She has taken many civil service tests over the years and has helped mentor many of her colleagues through the process.

Geoffrey Kirkpatrick is Director at Bethlehem Public Library in Delmar, NY.  He is a member of the New York Library Association Civil Service Committee and former president of NYLA.

Amanda Schiavulli (ska-voo-lee) is an experienced librarian who has worked in a variety of library types over the past 20 years. She received her M.S. from Simmons University in 2009 and has worked at libraries RI, NJ and NY. Amanda has been working at the Onondaga County Public System since 2019, and has so far survived a major cyberattck and the pandemic! As a system consultant, she provides assistance to OCPL’s 32 libraries in whatever needs they have such as Annual Reports, grants, policies, state aid, summer reading, trustee training and more. Amanda has also been involved in the Youth Services Section of NYLA in such roles as 2020/2021 YSS President, 2020-2022 YSS Council Representative and director of the 2017 NYLA-YSS Annual Spring Conference. You may not always recognize her as she has been known to wear a variety of costumes and wigs on Zoom throughout the pandemic. In her spare time, Amanda enjoys the company of her cats and traveling to different islands on Animal Crossing. She hopes to travel in real life again soon!

Live captioning will be provided.

This webinar will be recorded and a recording will be shared with all registrants afterward.
