Webinar: Increase Religious Equity by Reclassifying Dewey 200’s

August 28 @ 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

Webinar Description:

In 2019, OCLC provided an alternate arrangement for the Dewey Decimal System’s religion section (200’s), which organizes religious subjects more equitably by chronology and geography, rather than centering on Christianity. You’ll hear from OCLC about what the new arrangement is and how it was created. Also, you’ll hear from two public libraries (Lawrence, KS, and Springfield, MA) about how they implemented it as well as what tools are available to libraries interested in doing the same.

About the Presenters:

Alex Kyrios is Senior Editor of the Dewey Decimal Classification at OCLC. He oversees the continuous updating and revision of the classification, and works with partners and volunteers around the world to do so. He previously worked as a cataloguer at the University of Idaho and the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Emily McDonald is the Cataloging Librarian at Lawrence Public Library (Kansas). When she isn’t leading the cataloging department or cataloging children’s books, she is implementing optional Dewey arrangements, alternative subject headings, and empowering other catalogers to make local changes. She believes that everyone should see themselves on the shelf and in the catalog. She received her Master of Science in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin School of Information.

Matthew Jaquith has enjoyed a varied career spanning academic and public libraries in both technical and public services. He got a start at Amherst College with a variety of paraprofessional positions, moved to stack supervision at Brown University, and for the last decade and half has held a few posts at the Springfield City Library (Massachusetts) including reference, adult programming, and branch supervision. Since 2022, he has worked as Springfield’s Technical Services Supervisor, and it was there that he learned of OCLC’s Optional Arrangement for the Dewey 200’s. He has presented many times at state, regional, and national library conferences on topics as diverse as service to local authors; computer instruction in public libraries; and, most widely, the Dewey 200’s.

Elizabeth McKinstry is the Training and Programming Librarian at Springfield City Library in Massachusetts. She never met a special project she didn’t like.
