With the recent elevated interest in homeschooling, is your library strategically prepared to assist this growing community group? Research shows that up to 70% of homeschool families consider the library a main resource for their education. Good patron service begins with understanding of need. Join Deanna McGregor, Homeschool Liaison Librarian, as she explains why some families choose to transition informal learning at home into the educational path of homeschooling. Learn homeschool family motivations, New York State requirements, and what resources are available. Most importantly, she will share from experience how libraries can meet multiple literacy needs of families homeschooling young children.    

About the Presenter:

Deanna’s BS in Elementary Education and passion for helping others learn support her in serving the past 5 years as Homeschool Liaison Librarian at the Liverpool Public Library in Liverpool, New York.  With over 15 years of experience homeschooling her own children and as director of a community based academic co-operative, Deanna gained an understanding of the needs of homeschooling families. More recently she received her MILS from SUNY at Buffalo in 2017 with a focus on the symbiotic relationship between homeschool families and public libraries. In her role as Homeschool Liaison Librarian, she enjoys creating opportunities for library staff to connect with the homeschool community.
