Formal planning tends to be idealistic; reverse strategic planning tends to be pragmatic: the difference between the “right” way to do things and the “real” way. \nReverse strategic planning is about creating a group snapshot of what members of a team\, department\, committee\, or staff (25 people or less) are doing\, based on what they think is important:  \nIn the meeting\, everyone creates a prioritized list\, which is posted and commented upon by the entire group\, whose participants make comments in writing. Then each person makes a brief presentation\, responding to comments and questions. This helps people understand what co-workers do and how everyone’s work fits together. \nThis snapshot can reveal where a group is regarding current project goals\, job descriptions\, contracts\, strategic plans\, and much more. Project management flags\, such as project drift\, pet projects\, and overreach\, are revealed. Also\, it can provide useful clues about which employees see and understand the big picture and which are “hiding out\,” do their jobs without consideration for how their choices can impact the bigger picture. \nOutcomes: \n\nEvaluate the progress of projects of events\, projects\, plans\, and causes.\nReveal issues with how resources are being used.\nCreate a working strategic plan based on what people are already doing.\n\nPresenter: Pat Wagner has been a trainer and consultant for libraries for over 40 years. She focuses on personnel\, management\, and leadership issues\, including marketing\, project management\, and tech services productivity. \nRegistration closes on May 31 at 5 p.m. You will be sent a link to the webinar within 24 hours of the start time. In addition\, current global political crises have illuminated a new era of information warfare\, with political groups and governments weaponizing disinformation to undermine trust and democratic conversation globally. The spread of misleading information online has thus become a core societal concern. \nThis webinar will explore why misinformation and disinformation spread online. Drawing from academic research across a wide variety of disciplines—from social psychology to journalism to information science—we will explore what makes misinformation so compelling\, how social media platforms undermine our ability to spot falsehoods\, and why we are all vulnerable to believing and sharing misinformation. We will end with a discussion of what we can do to improve the quality of information sharing and help restore trust in authoritative information sources. \nPlease review our Code of Conduct\, our Statement on Viewpoints\, and details on Interpreter Services here: https://metro.org/code-of-conduct \nRegister @ METRO URL:https://clrc.org/event/metro-webinar-info-lit-part-3/ LOCATION:Online Via Zoom\, NY\, United States CATEGORIES:Continuing Education,Webinar ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://clrc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/METRO-1000-scaled.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20220608T100000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20220608T110000 DTSTAMP:20240329T032009 CREATED:20220422T184413Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220422T184413Z UID:10001488-1654682400-1654686000@clrc.org SUMMARY:LILRC Webinar: A Conversation with Kacen Callender\, Award Winning Author DESCRIPTION:Please join LILRC for a conversation with Kacen Callender (they/them)\, a bestselling and award winning author of fiction books for children\, teens\, and adults\, including King and the Dragonflies (2020 National Book Award Winner 2021\, Coretta Scott King Honor Book 2021\, Lambda Literary Award Winner 2021)\, Felix Ever After (Stonewall Honor Book 2021\, A Time Magazine Best YA Book of All Time) Hurricane Child (Stonewall Book Award Winner 2019\, Lambda Literary Award Winner 2019)\, and the upcoming Moonflower (July 2022). They think they know their users very well\, but they don’t. Many spend hours promoting events and programs\, services\, and resources\, but there are so many “no shows\,” or the services being promoted are not being used. This is simply because many library workers become heavily involved in marketing and promotional activities\, but they fail to do their research. Marketing is often done backwards\, or “upside down\,” meaning that we engage in marketing activities and then follow up with assessment. This is known as upside down (or backwards) marketing. When engaging in marketing activities\, library workers must study their users first to determine their needs\, expectations\, and desires. Data should drive your library’s marketing activities. In this 90 minute practical webinar\, the presenter will describe the process of conducting market research and explain why it’s so important to study your audience first before endeavouring in costly and time consuming marketing activities. \nLearning Outcomes: \nIn this 90 minute webinar\, participants will learn how to: \n\nunderstand market research\, and how it applies to libraries and information\norganizations distinguish between the concepts of market research and marketing research\nidentify your target market and target audiences\nutilize primary and secondary research techniques to study your library community\nengage in self-assessment instruments such as a SWOT analysis and perceptual map\n\nPresenter:\nMark Aaron Polger is an academic librarian and information literacy instructor who has been working in libraries since 1988. He received his MLIS degree in 2000 from the University of Western Ontario (London\, Ontario\, Canada) and has worked as a librarian in public\, hospital\, and academic libraries. Currently\, he is the Coordinator of Library Outreach at the College of Staten Island\, City University of New York (CUNY). He has been deeply engaged in working in various library signage activities since 2012. He has written about library signage audits in journals and other publications and has presented nationally at library conferences. \nIn September 2021\, he published Library Signage and Wayfinding Design: Communicating Effectively with Your User (ALA editions). He is also an accidental library marketer\, as most of his professional experience as a librarian involves the marketing of library services and resources. His research interests include library marketing\, outreach\, and UX (user experience) design. Currently\, he is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the open-access\, peer reviewed journal Marketing Libraries Journal\, which was launched in Fall 2017. \nRegister @ LILRC URL:https://clrc.org/event/lilrc-webinar-market-research/ LOCATION:Online Via Zoom\, NY\, United States CATEGORIES:Continuing Education,Webinar END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20220719T100000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20220719T110000 DTSTAMP:20240329T032009 CREATED:20220608T143924Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220608T143924Z UID:10001515-1658224800-1658228400@clrc.org SUMMARY:ESLN Webinar: Ready\, Set\, Policy! Every day millions of links from websites\, PDFs\, and search engine results become broken un-resolving 404 messages. This isn’t a new problem. The Internet has always been a sea of websites that come and go as servers age\, businesses change priorities and new information arises. Our dependence on access to information that exists primarily online has changed. A constantly shifting sea of broken links represents a potential loss of human knowledge in a world where consistent access to knowledge is critical. \nCan this knowledge be preserved?
