The result was that nonprofit agencies became more skilled at recruiting and signing up volunteers who were productive\, and the volunteers were treated with the respect they deserved.  \nEveryone benefited as did the agencies and communities they served. Unfortunately\, some libraries and library-allied organizations have not yet adopted this professional model. Instead\, recruitment is hit and miss\, with no guidelines and burdened with an attitude of desperation and guilt. \nThe biggest myth regarding volunteers is that they are “free.” They need supervision and encouragement. They might not receive a paycheck\, but their compensation is the time\, attention\, appreciation\, and recognition of co-workers\, managers\, and leadership\, companionship\, and the knowing that they have accomplished something. \nVolunteers have the same lifecycle as paid employees and many of the same legal conditions for working for the library. Are they a right match for a library? Do they have technical\, clerical\, or professional skills? How are they at dealing with conflicts with library customers? Have you screened them for financial problems\, a criminal background check\, or anything that might flag them for being around children? Have they received the same orientation as the paid employees\, as well as periodic reviews and consistent positive reinforcement? And what happens when you need to say good-bye? \n\nEvaluate your library’s volunteer program: How do you treat your volunteers and how do volunteers contribute to your library?\nCreate and maintain a welcoming\, rewarding\, and goal-oriented environment for volunteers.\nBroaden your outreach to more potential volunteer candidates.\nPartner with nonprofits and other agencies to build volunteer pools and share candidates.\n\nPresenter: Pat Wagner \nRegistration closes on October 4 at 5 p.m. You will be sent a link to the webinar within 24 hours of the start time. One historian has even compared the technological achievement of building this canal with NASA’s going to the moon in the 1960s. As a result of the canal’s substantial cultural\, economic\, political and social impact\, New York became the “Empire State\,” the leader of the nation in so many areas. Until the publication of Laurence M. Hauptman’s Conspiracy of Interests: Iroquois Dispossession and the Rise of New York State (1999)\, no historian had previously examined the devastating effect of the canal era on Indigenous peoples in the Empire State. In this talk\, Hauptman\, the author of numerous books on the Haudenosaunee\, will focus on the half century before the opening of the Erie Canal\, specifically on state canal policies on three of the Six Nations—the Cayugas\, Onondagas\, and Oneidas. He will show that even before the establishment of the Western Inland Lock Navigation Company in the 1790s\, the Erie Canal’s predecessor\, state politicians in Albany\, transportation interests\, and speculators were working hand-in-hand at separating the Haudenosaunee from their extensive territories. \nJoin the Erie Canal Museum and Skä•noñh Great Law of Peace Center for this free virtual discussion on October 8th at 11AM on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:This event is being held online via a Zoom meeting. \nStephanie Anderson of Albany Public Library will share the library staff’s experiences and lead a discussion on doing a diversity audit of their picture book collection. \nFrom Stephanie: \nAfter attending multiple webinars and training sessions related to creating diverse collections\, I was frustrated by a lack of information on the “How To”.  I chose to use an outside vendor for APL’s overall collection\, but with picture books\, genres and subjects are not always listed in the record of the book. A hands-on approach appeared to be a good way to assess what was in APL’s collection.  A working group of Youth Services Librarians and I would have to figure out how to structure an audit from the ground-up\, without any solid examples to guide us. \nIn this discussion\, I am going to go over what our working group at APL created\, what went well\, and what absolutely did not work at all. I have several suggestions for “what to do the next time”\, based on what we learned throughout this process. This discussion will be less about outcomes\, and more about “how do I start”  with information on the pitfalls you may encounter along the way. The outcomes of our audit were encouraging. \nAbout the Presenter: Stephanie Anderson has been the Head of the Collection Management Services Department of Albany Public Library since 2018.  Prior to joining APL in 2014\, she spent time as a Children’s Dept. Lead Bookseller and Merchandising Manager for Barnes & Noble. She has an MSIS in Archives and Records Management from SUNY-Albany. To encourage the CMS Staff’s professional development\, she often enrolls them in collections or cataloging courses\, as a group\, for fun! \nRegister @ CDLC URL:https://clrc.org/event/cdlc-webinar-diversity-audit-picture/ LOCATION:Online Via Zoom\, NY\, United States CATEGORIES:Continuing Education,Webinar END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20221013T140000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20221013T150000 DTSTAMP:20240328T094508 CREATED:20220901T130748Z LAST-MODIFIED:20220901T130748Z UID:10001548-1665669600-1665673200@clrc.org SUMMARY:RRLC Webinar: Composting and Beyond for Library Staff DESCRIPTION:Join us for a webinar on composting and zero waste behavior changes for library staff! Maybe they didn’t want to wait in line to talk with a reference librarian during finals. Maybe they are ticked off because the event–which they did not buy tickets for–was sold out\, and they were turned away at the door. Maybe they don’t like your books\, your programming\, your services\, or the art on the wall.  \nMaybe they don’t like policies related to the pandemic\, ones you have no control over. Maybe they have a cause or political position and won’t be happy until the library leadership accepts all of their terms\, unconditionally. Maybe they don’t want to lower their voice\, take their support peacock outside\, stop yelling at other customers\, stopping cutting up magazines\, stopping hogging a terminal after timeout\, or rein in their rampant young folks. \nStarting with the assumption that most people are good people doing the best they know how. Topics include doing your homework (do you have the facts?)\, tweaking policies\, improving your responses\, how the library’s physical environment can be a help or hindrance\, and where to draw the line\, plus some ways to de-escalate and lower the drama quotient. \nFollowing this webinar\, you will know how to: \n\nBetter maintain a positive “performance state” regardless of the other person’s behavior.\nHave more strategies and tactics to bring to your encounters with library visitors who are not having a good day.\nHelp create the environment in your library that lowers drama and supports positive staff and visitor interactions.\n\nPresenter: Pat Wagner has been a trainer and consultant for libraries for over 40 years. She focuses on personnel\, management\, and leadership issues\, including marketing\, project management\, and tech services productivity.  \nRegistration closes on October 18 at 5 p.m. You will be sent a link to the webinar within 24 hours of the start time. Whether it’s abuse from patrons\, coworkers\, or secondary trauma from trying to meet the needs of the community that go far beyond what library services can provide\, library workers take on more pressure and stress than we expected as new staff.  \nThe groundbreaking Urban Library Trauma Study (ULTS) used emancipatory and participatory action research frameworks to explore how public library workers in urban centers experience trauma while providing library services and create a path forward for exploring institutional and individual solutions that will enable library workers and their institutions to continue providing vital library services to communities in need while still caring for the well being of staff. \nWe will discuss our series of recommendations to address the pervasive issue of trauma in the library workplace and  how the library field can research solutions to problems while being radically inclusive of the workers those problems most impact. \nAbout the Presenter: \nLeah Dudak is a former librarian and current Ph.D. student at Syracuse University’s Information School. Dudak’s research looks at public libraries and the trauma that library staff encounter giving attention to supporting library workers\, systemic issues contributing to trauma\, trauma-informed care\, and librarianship. She also views her work through anticolonial\, feminist\, disability\, and artistic lenses. \nLive captioning will be provided. \nThis webinar will be recorded and a recording will be shared with all registrants afterward. The Q&A/discussion will NOT be recorded. \nRegister via Zoom \n**All participants will have the option to request a certificate of attendance for xxx contact hours** \nAll CLRC events are open to CLRC members and members of the Empire State Library Network. \nAll Attendees are expected to follow CLRC’s Code of Conduct URL:https://clrc.org/event/esln-webinar-ul-trauma-study/ LOCATION:Online Via Zoom\, NY\, United States CATEGORIES:Continuing Education,Webinar ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://clrc.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/ul-trauma-rectangle.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20221110T130000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20221110T140000 DTSTAMP:20240328T094509 CREATED:20220531T152717Z LAST-MODIFIED:20221012T152813Z UID:10001504-1668085200-1668088800@clrc.org SUMMARY:LILRC Webinar: Your Hiring Philosophy DESCRIPTION:Your Hiring Philosophy [Session 2] \nOnce a director knows what their values are as a manager\, they can turn to determining how the library as a whole should approach HR. The first step in that process is defining the library’s approach to hiring\, which is the first interaction you will have with future employees. In this session\, participants will learn about hiring best practices and how to craft a hiring philosophy that aligns with how the library sees itself. We will then have a chance for participants to start crafting their library’s hiring philosophy. \nLaying the Foundation: Developing Your HR Philosophies \nPersonnel is usually over 50% of a library’s budget\, but few libraries have dedicated HR professionals navigating the ins and outs of HR. In this 4-part series\, participants will learn how to lay a foundation for what type of manager they want to be and how to create an HR philosophy for their library that aligns with their library’s mission\, vision\, and values. This program is the second in a four part series\, all of which can be attended as a stand alone or as a continuous learning experience. \nPresenters: \nKate Hall is the Executive Director of the Northbrook Public Library after serving as Director at the New Lenox Public Library and in various library positions in the Chicagoland area for over 20 years. In her 11 years as a library director\, Kate has been in leadership positions in state and national library groups including the American Library Association\, Illinois Library Association\, and Reaching Across Illinois Library System. She has served on the committee and chaired Director’s University\, an intensive training for new Illinois Public Library Directors. Kate is the recipient of the 2021 Illinois Library Association Librarian of the Year Award and has just launched Illinois Libraries Present\, a new statewide joint programming cooperative. \nKathy Parker was the director of the Glenwood-Lynwood (IL) Public Library District from 2002-2018 after serving as Assistant Director at the Harvey (IL) Public Library. \nShe has worked in public and private libraries for over 40 years in nearly every department and co-founded Director’s University.
