For this month’s meeting ECP SIG member Twanna Hodge will be giving us a sneak preview of her upcoming National Network of Libraries of Medicine presentation Integrating Cultural Humility into Practice. We’ll be helping Twanna prepare her talk for future presentations so come ready to offer some constructive feedback!

Presention Description:

In order to provide the best service possible and to stay true to the profession’s code of ethics we must understand the influence that culture has on our ability to “work without prejudice” according to the MLA Code of Ethics (2010) and provide “the highest level of service to all library users…equitable service policies; equitable access; and accurate, unbiased, and courteous responses to all requests” found in the ALA Professional Ethics (2017). Cultural humility urges us to engage in critical, consistent self-reflection and critique with the understanding that being patron-centered is important to moving through an equitable profession.

This presentation will provide an overview of cultural humility, the similarities and difference between cultural humility and cultural compentency, understanding the importance of cultural humility in healthcare and health sciences librarianship, and how to adopt a cultural humilty framework.

About the Presenter:

Twanna Hodge, MLIS is a graduate of the University of Washington Information School. She was the Diversity Resident Librarian at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and was the previous Information Literacy and Collection Development Librarian at the University of the Virgin Islans-St. Thomas. She is an Academic/Research Librarian at the SUNY Upstate Medical University Health Sciences Library. She has presented about diversity in LIS education, implicit bias, and cultural humility. Twanna is a 2013 ALA Spectrum Scholar and 2018 ALA Emerging Leader. Pronouns are she/her/hers.

In this group you’ll identify issues that are important to you as an early career professional as well as network and trade stories with other regional early career professionals.

You’re eligible for the ECP SIG if:

  • you’re in the first five (5) years of your library/information career and
  • you’re a CLRC or ESLN member (if your institution or parent insitution is a member, so are you! Don’t hesitate to ask if you’re unsure).
