New York Library Association – Section of School Librarians 2026 Conference

Thank you so much, CLRC, for your generous support in sponsoring my hotel stay as I attended the New York Library Association – Section of School Librarians (NYLA SSL) conference in Ithaca. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to bond with and learn alongside my fellow Library Department members, develop relationships with and learn from other Library Media Specialists from across the state, and hear inspiring and encouraging messages from accomplished authors.
One of the highlights of the conference was listening to the keynotes from award-winning authors and illustrators Candace Fleming, Neal Shusterman, Kelly Yang, Vashti Harrison, and Jerry Craft. Hearing them each speak about their craft, the influence of librarians, and the importance of stories—now more than ever—was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
I also came away with a wealth of practical strategies and ideas. I spent time learning how to reach more students with advocacy efforts and collaborative programming, how to better utilize AI to personalize my students’ learning, how to use social media for “bite-sized” professional development, and how to forge stronger partnerships with our local public library to expand our reach. And, of course, I left with a long list of book recommendations to add to our collection!
This experience was especially meaningful given the current climate in my district. We are currently navigating an unprecedented financial crisis that has resulted in significant cuts to our Library Department, and the emotional weight of these cuts has been heavy, knowing that I will be taking on new and expanded responsibilities next year. This conference allowed me to regroup, gain skills necessary for my changing role, and find encouragement in a community of peers who understand the challenges we are facing.
Thank you again for investing in my growth and for your steadfast support of libraries. I am returning to my district feeling refreshed, better prepared, and deeply inspired to create “reading joy” for my students next year.
