Bring your friends! Bring your soon-to-be friends!

Wednesday, June 20
9:30 am to 12:00 pm
Cazenovia Public Library

Workshop Description:
Learn the benefits of gathering community volunteers to support your library’s programs and services. We’ll utilize a checklist to develop a Friends of the Library group: recruiting helpers for a steering committee, determining the Friends’ mission, expanding their membership, and growing the leadership to sustain an active organization.

Target Audience: Library trustees and administrators interested in establishing a Friends group for their library; community volunteers; other staff members who work with Friends groups. Libraries are encouraged to send a team of three people.*  Members of existing Friends of Libraries groups, especially those working to revitalize a group, will also find this workshop helpful.

*Please note that this is encouraged, not required.

About the Presenters:
Lisa C. Wemett, MSLS, is First Vice President/President-Elect for the Friends of Libraries Section of the New York Library Association (NYLA).  After more than 30 years working in public libraries, Lisa retired in 2009 from the Webster Public Library, located in a suburb of Rochester, where she was the assistant director for thirteen years.  Lisa has extensive background in training and development for staff and volunteers, program planning, marketing, and supervision of personnel. For 9½ years, Lisa was staff advisor to the Friends of WPL, helping the organization grow their membership numbers substantially and securing their nonprofit status from the IRS.  She received the first “NYLA Above & Beyond Award” in 2014 which cited her extraordinary support and commitment to NYLA over the course of her career.

Terry Mulee is Second Vice President of the Friends of Libraries Section, promoting the organization to current and potential members.  FLS/NYLA grew 60% during the first four years of her tenure. Terry chairs the Communications Committee, serving as editor of the FLS “Friends News and Notes” newsletter, and web liaison to maintain the FLS webpage.  At NYLA’s annual conference she coordinates the Section’s booth at the trade show encouraging all NYLA members to join FLS.
