The Central NY Library Resources Council supports libraries in Herkimer, Madison, Oneida & Onondaga counties and advocates for libraries everywhere!

We Love New York Libraries!

CLRC’s Role

CLRC’s advocacy objective is to educate librarians and library assistants in effective advocacy skills to use on behalf of their libraries, and to keep them informed regarding the status of legislation affecting their library’s ability to serve their patrons.

Legislative Breakfasts

The 2013 advocacy breakfasts were a huge success! Check out our Facebook page (“like” us while you’re there) and see the pictures of CLRC members interacting with their legislators in Utica and Syracuse.  As in past years, we began each day with a continental breakfast and a bit of socializing, followed by the ever-popular “legislator speed dating.”  This format is a round-robin way to meet with each legislator. Listen for the bell, move to the next table, spread the word. If you didn’t get a chance to join us this year, be sure to watch for opportunities to join us in 2014!

Advocacy Day

Our statewide Advocacy Day, which CLRC does in conjunction with our professional partners at NYLA, is on February 26, 2014.  Please note that this year, it’s on a Thursday and it starts a little later than usual.  What hasn’t changed is that CLRC will once again be sponsoring a bus for local librarians to hop on board and head to Albany to thank our legislators for all they do in support of libraries.  Prior to Advocacy Day, CLRC is sponsoring Public Speaking for Library Advocacy with speech coach, Peter Iglinski.

Turning the Page

The Public Library Association has created a free, self-paced, interactive advocacy training program called Turning the Page.  NYLA will be doing a six-week long webinar series with Libby Post that uses this program.  If you would like to take part as a group, CLRC will be hosting group viewings at our Syracuse office. Sign up for the first session here!

Or see our Upcoming Events page for more information on how to register for all of these great advocacy opportunities!

CLRC’s Legislative Committee

The Legislative Committee assists staff in developing activities and projects that further the advocacy objectives. These include hosting annual legislative breakfasts throughout the four-county region, organizing an annual bus trip to Albany on Library Advocacy Day and arranging local visits to legislators’ offices. CLRC works with local politicians to facilitate communications between representatives and constituents. CLRC advocacy events bring librarians to their legislators. Together, we can explain and demonstrate the value of libraries to elected officials so that they continue to support us.

CLRC also works closely with the New York Library Association in promoting statewide legislative goals for libraries of all types.

Advocacy Calendar

In the first week of March, CLRC sponsors and organizes a bus to drive library supporters from Central New York to Albany for Library Advocacy Day (formerly referred to as Lobby Day).

On the first two Fridays of December, CLRC hosts legislative breakfasts so that library supporters and librarians can talk to local legislators about the importance of libraries.
