WNYLRC Virtual Event: From Trees to Fee – An Open Data Scavenger Hunt Through Buffalo, New York
July 23, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT
The rise of open data has completely changed how people access information. Sitting at one’s computer, one can access anything from the prevalence of lead in nearby homes, which neighborhoods are most likely to be patrolled by police, or the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow with a push of a button. This allows local residents to advocate with just as much data and insight as established political figures and expert lobby groups. And because the only thing more fun than revolutionizing democracy is friendly competition, we invite you to the first Open Data Scavenger Hunt. Compete against your fellow librarians, either with a team or by yourself, to find local data about the city of Buffalo, New York. While Buffalo is used as a case study, the skills used here are applicable to civic data in any community. The members of the winning team will each receive a five dollar gift card to Tim Hortons.
This is intended to be a fun virtual event, we welcome everyone from open data experts to newcomers. Prep a cocktail or a mocktail, make sure your device is fully charged, kick back, and enjoy!
