Communications & Continuity of Operations during a Disaster: REady Steady In the Library: taking Initiative before an Emergency, Natural disaster, or Trauma

When the unimaginable happens in your library, there may not be time to carefully craft a blurb for the website. But staff, the community that depends on the library, and the emergency responders who can help need to know… something.  In today’s world, having a continuity of operations plan (COOP) is essential as having an insurance policy.

Dan Wilson will discuss and demonstrate how an easy-to-maintain one-page COOP plan will keep preparedness at the forefront and will ensure greater accountability by providing a step-by-step method for consistent response to any type of emergency or service disruption.  All attendees will be provided a template for the one page COOP that can be easily tailored to their setting.

Dan Wilson is the Associate Director for Collections & Library Services at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Library.  He was the Coordinator for the National Network/Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) National Emergency Preparedness & Response Initiative from 2007 to 2016, when he facilitated training programs and engagement opportunities around emergency preparedness for libraries, communities, CBHOs, and emergency planners.  Dan has worked with state library agencies in South Carolina, New Jersey, Montana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia.

Dan has library roots in New York.  He received his MLS from the former School of Library Science at SUNY Geneseo in 1982.  His first library job was filling in for a faculty member on sabbatical at the Dutchess Community College Library, followed by seven years working at the SUNY Canton Southworth Library.
