Library Advocacy

CLRC’s advocacy objective is to educate librarians and library assistants in effective advocacy skills to use on behalf of their libraries, and to keep them informed regarding the status of legislation affecting their library’s ability to serve their patrons.

Advocacy Day

In conjunction with our professional partners at NYLA, the 2017 statewide Advocacy Day was held on Wednesday, March 1. CLRC sponsored a bus for local library advocates heading to Albany to speak out for library funding and thank our legislators for their support of libraries.

Here is a summary of the 2017 NYLA Legislative Priorities.

Legislative Breakfasts

In 2016, the annual CLRC Legislative Breakfasts were held on:
December 2 – Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Library, Utica
December 9 – Onondaga County Public Library, Central Branch, Syracuse

2017 dates to be announced.

New York State Fair

Each year, CLRC hosts a New York State Fair booth for New York Libraries.

PLA's Advocacy Training Program

The Public Library Association has created a free, self-paced, interactive advocacy training program called Turning the Page. Read more about the program here.

CLRC's Legislative Committee

The Legislative Committee assists staff in developing activities and projects that further the advocacy objectives. These include hosting annual legislative breakfasts throughout the four-county region, organizing an annual bus trip to Albany on Library Advocacy Day and arranging local visits to legislators’ offices. CLRC works with local politicians to facilitate communications between representatives and constituents. CLRC advocacy events bring librarians to their legislators. Together, we can explain and demonstrate the value of libraries to elected officials so that they continue to support us.

CLRC also works closely with the New York Library Association (NYLA) in promoting statewide legislative goals for libraries of all types.
