WNYLRC Virtual History Happy Hour: Roanoke’s Black Colony of the Civil War

November 17, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm EST

Many people have heard of the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the mysterious disappearance of its settlers, but did you know there was another colony on the island during the Civil War? After a Union victory, Roanoke became home to the largest population of formerly enslaved black southerners during the war. In this class we explore the incredible growth of this community, the issues they encountered, and why it came to an end after just five years.

This is intended to be a fun, socializing virtual event. Prep a cocktail or a mocktail, kick back, and listen to this interesting piece of history! Participants will be free to ask questions.
