Webinar: Disability Access and Libraries – Current Issues and Future Directions

November 8, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EST

Webinar Description:

Accessibility means many things in libraries, including the ensuring that patrons of all (dis)abilities can utilize library services. While much responsibility for making technologies and content accessible falls to the publishers, vendors, and developers, libraries must play a critical role in ensuring accessibility throughout. Unfortunately, like much of the world, libraries have far to go in terms of achieving access for disabled patrons. For two years, Kate Deibel has worked as the inaugural Inclusion and Accessibility Librarian at Syracuse University Libraries. Through this position, she helped guide efforts to improve accessibility both physically and digitally for our patrons. This talk will highlight aspects of this work and which libraries should also focus upon now. Furthermore, an eye will be cast to the future of accessible libraries and how various needs will only be addressed through multiple, collaborative efforts from all aspects of librarianship.

About the Presenter:

Kate Deibel has had a varied career in academia working within and across many disciplines, including computer science, education, disability, accessibility, comics, design engineering, technology adoption, digital literacies, and libraries. She currently resides in Syracuse, NY where she works as the Inclusion & Accessibility Librarian at Syracuse University Libraries. An ardent advocate for usable and accessible technologies, she works to ensure that library technologies are effective tools for both library patrons and staff. She enjoys overly spicy food and does her best to prevent her silly cat from also eating it.
